History of Tip City

Tipp City was not the first name for this suburb outside of Dayton. It was originally called Tippecanoe and then the name was changed to Tippecanoe City. Later it received its current name of Tipp City in 1938 due to another location inside the state with the name of Tippecanoe.

Tippecanoe as it was called back then was founded in 1840 as the Miami River and Erie Canal were developing. The name comes from presidential candidate William Henry Henry Harrison's nickname of Tippecanoe. He received this nickname for his heroism at the Battle of Tippecanoe on November 7, 1811.

Tipp City gained its place on the map in Ohio and the greater Dayton area because it became a stopping-off point for boaters traveling down the Miami River and through the Erie Canal. The beginnings of the downtown area were popular for the number of bars and the red light district. Today you can still see the dry Erie Canal locks just east of downtown Tipp City. The town grew even more with the development of railroads in the 1850s which put the surrounding canals out of business and then eventually brought the city to a time of rapid growth.

The shortening of the name of Tipp City was a decision made by the US Postal Service in the 1930s to resolve a conflict between the other city that is still named Tippecanoe Ohio today. The high school still retains the full name of Tippecanoe High School, however. The building of major roadways including US Route 25 and Interstate 75 brought even more people into the area throughout the 20th century. Today it is a major bedroom community of the larger city of Dayton Ohio.

Today Tipp City is one of the Premier dining and shopping destinations of Ohio and the greater Dayton area. The historic downtown area of Tipp City is one of the most charming and fun places to take a stroll and drink in its friendly atmosphere and unique stores. Tipp City was recently voted one of the five best hometowns in Ohio.
